== Intercontinental Championship and FIFA Confederations Cup ==
The first two editions, called "King Fahd Cup" or
"Intercontinental Championship", were not official at the time.
Since the 1997 edition, the first officially recognised by FIFA, the
tournament is called "(FIFA) Confederations Cup".
Later, FIFA included the 1992 and 1995 editions among the official ones.
The "‹Artemio Franchi Trophy, see page artfranfin›",
contested twice in 1985 and 1993 and revived as "Finalissima" in 2022,
can be considered a precursor.

Was to be staged in Mexico, 8th-20th January 1999; was then postponed
to 28th July-8th August 1999 so that the French team takes part. On
Oct 23, 1998, the French football federation had announced France would
not take part (as they couldn't field a team remotely resembling the
one which won the World Cup, since the players involved are mostly
playing for clubs in leagues which have matches in January - and the
clubs pay the wages). France refused to enter anyway, citing the
start of its professional league at the same time, and as substitutes
Germany were entered - they were entitled to participation as European
champions 1996 but had refused because of the original January date (as
in 1997 falling in their winter break).
