Discarded New League Format §disc
At the start of the season, a controversial new league format was announced, consisting
of three "Rounds":
Round-1 §rd1
A single round robin between all 16 clubs.
Round-2 §rd2
Top-8 of Round-1 play double round robin in Group-1
Bottom-8 of Round-1 play double round robin in Group-2
Round-3 §rd3
Top-6 of Group-1 of Round-2 play single round robin in Group-3
Bottom-2 of Group-1 and Top-2 of Group-2 of Round-2 play single round robin in Group-4
Bottom-6 of Group-2 of Round-2 play single round robin in Group-5
Clubs carry over records from Round-2 (but not from Round-1)
(how this was supposed to work for Group-4 is obscure)
NB: hosting rights in Round-3 were to be reversed from fixtures in Round-1;
two teams to be relegated (presumably both from Group-5 although that
is not completely clear from the published regulations which only said
that the "Final Table Standing shall be drawn from points and goals
accumulated in Round-2 and Round-3"; these also stated that "The club
that is ranked in 1st Position in the Final Table Standing shall be
declared the 1st Division Champions for the UPL 2025/26 Season", but
did not specify explicitly that that club is to come from Group-3, as
would seem logical).
Out of protest against this convoluted and fairly nonsensical new format,
Vipers refused to play its fixtures in the first three rounds;
after that, on Oct 18, the FUFA Executive Committee suspended the new format.
